Sickening defense of Bill Ayers

I just read the petition to support Bill Ayers, which currently has 4090 academic signatories. It is absolutely sickening. The letter never actually address in any way the horrific violence committed by Ayers and his wife and never disavowed. Instead the only mention is the following:
"The current characterizations of Professor Ayers---“unrepentant terrorist,” “lunatic leftist”---are unrecognizable to those who know or work with him. It’s true that Professor Ayers participated passionately in the civil rights and antiwar movements of the 1960s, as did hundreds of thousands of Americans. His participation in political activity 40 years ago is history..."

Participated passionately? As did hundreds of thousands of Americans? Do these people have any academic honesty? Are they really trying to make a moral equivalence between violent terrorists like Ayers and the hundreds of thousands of Americans who managed to respect our laws while taking part in the movements of the 1960's? This is absolutely sickening. If these people were scholars, they would make their defense of Ayers AFTER acknowledging his violent history, rather than ignoring it. This is just a stark illustration that there is no defense of this man, only obfuscation. I will be personally contacting all the signatories at my institution to ask their opinion on the paragraph above.

That petition has to be one of the most grotesque things I've seen lately. One really amusing thing was the way so many signers listed their doctoral degree after their names. Hint, folks - real scholars don't do that.
And was that the real Bill Ayers who posted above? What on earth is "the 25 million"? Inquiring minds want to know!

Silly me, I stand corrected. Now I know what the 25 million stand for. Again, if this is the real Ayers, I commend him on his Khmer Rouge-like approach.

I think you have no idea what is going on. He MADE MISTAKES... why can't you understand that? He now is a moral and upright man - a professor and civil servant in many ways and you seek to outright reject him? This is what disgusts me about people like you. And bringing it into the election is outrageous - his mistakes were back when Obama was 8. Stop trying to make this about character and far-off associations because the McCain campaign "can't talk about the economy." As a student I WANT A JOB when I graduate - McCain will plummet our economy further down the crapper - Obama has the right thinking. So fine pine on all you want about Ayers but think for a second about what REALLY matters to this country.

He says they weren't "mistakes"--he says they didn't do enough. He's not moral and upright now--if given the chance, he would continue. And do more.

Nice friends Obama has!

Funny how the Bill Ayers blog has only two postings on it, one dated 29 October, the very same day RWP posted his "Sickening defense of Bill Ayers" post, and then the second one dated 30 October, the very same day that Bill Ayers somehow managed to find RWP's posting and then placed his own comment there.

And, of course, the Bill Ayers blog makes it a point to claim that he and Barack are in some sort of collusion.

It's just all too good to be true.

I think this Bill Ayers blog is totally bogus and concocted by RWP.

Sorry I can't take credit for the bill ayers blog, your post is the first i noticed about this blog, I never even clicked on it!

And furthermore, why would Bill Ayers suddenly create a piddling little two-entry blog on yahoo blogger when he already has two well-established blogs?

And see also this WaPo article about Bill Ayers and his blogging.

Dr. RWP, you are rapidly losing your credibility here...

Well then, I will take your word on that, and conclude that it was some troll who left it there!
